Satellite communication got into my system while I was working in the Middle East, I was amazed when I saw an operator working the states from a park using a couple of boomer yagis. I built several antennas for this purpose. While you can work the "birds" with just about anything, specially the Phase II satellites that very close by, you need more gain to obitan usable signal at further ranges. Right now (2016) there are no Phase II or Phase III D satellites like some years ago that you were able to work the world with the antenna son top of a table, but there are plenty to get you feet wet with. I recommend AMSAT as a source of information. I had the honor of being the AMSAT Caribbean Coordinator for some years but unfortunately activity on the satellite slowed down considerably.
